In the United States, Thanksgiving is a public holiday on the fourth Thursday in November. It was originally a day when people celebrated the end of the harvest and thanked God for it. Thanksgiving has become synonymous with family, food and football over the years. But this unassuming American holiday is not without controversy. Schools still teach children that Thanksgiving marks the day that Pilgrims met helpful Indians who gave them food, farming techniques and more to overcome the bitter New England cold. Actually because I and my family are Persian, we don’t have thanksgiving day in our culture but since we have moved in US, we celebrate this day with my uncle’s family and we give thanks for what we have.
ReplyDeleteThis past Thanksgiving, I went to my uncle’s house to help my aunt to make the turkey and other things, then my family came there. First we held each other’s hands and thanked God for everything then we started eating! The meal included a turkey, stuffing, potatoes, cranberry sauce, gravy, pumpkin pie, and vegetables and it was so delicious. I had a really good time on that day.
ReplyDeleteThanksgiving, as it’s told in American schools, was the first harvest feast of winter when helpful Native Americans were invited to eat after helping the Pilgrims survive. There is some controversy because the arrival of the Pilgrims and other Europeans was the cause of millions of deaths and and the upheaval of an entire culture that is still felt today. Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November.
My family celebrates Thanksgiving by spending a day frantically cooking “classic” Thanksgiving foods -- turkey, creamed pearl onions, sweet potatoes. We usually have some array of cousins over, and since I don’t know them, that gets a bit awkward. I’ve never been very inclined to overeat at Thanksgiving dinner because no one in my family can cook, even though they think they can. We celebrate Thanksgiving for the food, not for the idea of it. I don’t think anyone in my family thinks about its history, positive or negative. It’s just a family holiday.
Thanksgiving is a United States exclusive holiday that is very significant to many people. The story of Thanksgiving is that the pilgrims came from Europe and had a big dinner with all of the native peoples. It represents our respect to other races and people. It happened at Plymouth rock in 1621 with the native Wampanoag people. In 1863, our president Abraham Lincoln made it a national holiday. There is a lot of controversy within this holiday because lots of native americans were slaughtered when the colonists spread out through the land. Some people are very sensitive during this time of year due to these massacres.
ReplyDeleteWhat I did on our national holiday called Thanksgiving was pretty typical for the average American citizen. We flew to Kansas to visit my Aunt, Uncle. Cousin, Grandma and Grandpa. We sat and relaxed all day at the apartment we were staying in. We cooked lots of food and had a huge feast at dinner time. Our bellies were full with turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, cranberry sauce, fruit salad, asparagus, and three different kinds of pie. We had a pumpkin pie, a chocolate pudding pie, and a cheesecake with a salted caramel sauce. It was delicious. Also we watched the football game. We all relaxed and talked about our lives and reflected on what we have done in the past. It was a fun time, even though we had to fly for about 13 hours round trip. It was a good thanksgiving and I was satisfied with the turnout of this particular thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving
The history of thanksgiving is when the Pilgrims and Native Americans sat and eat dinner together.Pilgrims were people from Europe who wanted to make a life on their own. They were the first to successfully settle. Each side brought food from each side and said what they were thankful for. For the Pilgrims is was that they survived a year in their new environment and for the indians is was that they weren’t killed by the Pilgrims. Which ended up only lasting a generation.
In my family Thanksgiving isn’t about being thankful for what you have like it use to be but it’s about the food. The day before Thanksgiving we make the pies apple and pumpkin. On Thanksgiving day my grandma and grandpa make the rest of the food. They take the turkey and cook it from morning til night so its juicy and tender. They also make mash potatoes, gravy, brussel spouts, rolls cranberry sauce, and stuffing. Oh, and by the way all this food is homemade...EVERYTHING. I normally hide in my room and watch tv all day. Truthfully I don’t care much about the holiday I just like the food.
ReplyDeleteThanksgiving is an american tradition of turkey and food that goes back to the first colony that had a turkey feast with the native people it is normally on the 3rd thursday of november each year and that is it nothing more.

ReplyDeleteThanksgiving is a tradition that the U.S. and Canada both celebrate. Here in the U.S. the origin of Thanksgiving dates back to 1621 to the celebration between the Wompanoags, a Native American tribe, and the Pilgrims, settlers from England seeking religious freedom. The first year the pilgrims were in America a lot of them died and they had trouble with food, but the next year they received help with their crops and lifestyle from the Wompanoags. Resulting in the first harvest/ Thanksgiving dinner There is a lot of controversy surrounding Thanksgiving considering the terrible events following.
For Thanksgiving, my family and I had a small dinner at my house with some family friends. Traditionally people eat turkey for thanksgiving but my family grilled salmon . Usually for Thanksgiving, my family goes down to San Francisco but my sister was not here this year so we decided to stay home. Thanksgiving is a good time to connect with family and appreciate the small things in life.
